A chocolate brown Highland calf named Hugo has been born at Noah's Ark zoo farm this week.

His mum Marilyn hit local headlines in 2012 when she first arrived at the zoo when she made a bid for freedom by jumping fences and dashing the around crop fields at the 100 acre site.

The colour of the thick-furred coat of little Hugo is halfway between that of his big shaggy black dad and the blonde coat of his mum.

The Highland breed is commonly found in rugged, hilly regions of Scotland where the breed was first developed by farmers.

Marilyn and Hugo are now resting inside the undercover animal show pens at the zoo which are open to the public.

They are staying out of the elements in deep straw while the pair bond and Hugo gets stronger on his feet.

Noah's Ark was originally a dairy farm for 40 years and different breeds of cattle are still part of the zoo farm today including Jersey, Ankole and Highland cows.

The family attraction offers educational animal workshops for schools which feature farmyard and exotic animals and is now open for the new season for educational visits and family day trips.

The award-winning zoo farm re-opened for its new season at the beginning of this month and is expecting a busy year to include the opening of the new 20 acre elephant exhibit and the arrival of other new animals.

There are now more than 100 sorts of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates at Noah's Ark, including several important species classified as 'endangered' to 'vulnerable' on the IUCN Red List.

The zoo farm which attracts more than 135,000 visitors each year was started in 1999 by Wraxall farmer Anthony Bush and his artist wife Christina.

It is home to lions, giraffe, zebras, rhinos, tigers, gibbons and camels and boasts the longest hedge maze in the world.

Visitors can also enjoy huge indoor and outdoor adventure playgrounds.
