Despite being reduced to 10 men after 27 minutes with the sending off of keeper Lee Matthews, Clevedon Town were unlucky to loose this encounter with Bishops Cleeve by the odd goal.
Clevedon started strongly and in the very first minute had an opportunity when a free kick out on the left hand side of the field, just inside of their own half, by Rory Prendergast, found Dave Stone in space on the opposite wing.
Stone took the ball to the bye line but in his efforts to cross to the waiting forwards, the ball slipped just over the goal line for a goal kick.
Only a few minutes later Russell Church moved down the visitors left flank and crossed to Lloyd Mills in the centre of the park, his first time shot from some 30 yards out was straight at James Nortei in the hosts' goal.
On 27 minutes came the incident that changed the outcome of the game, Bishops Cleeve were on the attack, Lee Matthews ran out of his area and as Joe Parker headed the ball over him, Matthews reached up and deliberately handled the ball.
The referee adjudged that Matthews had prevented an obvious goal scoring opportunity and sent his from the field.
This resulted in a re-arrangement in the Clevedon formation as Rory Prendergast took over in goal with the resultant changes elsewhere.
As the visitors settled to playing with 10 men, their hosts came in to the game more but their efforts only amounted to seven or eight corners that were dealt with effectively by the Clevedon defence, with Prendergast quickly establishing who was in charge of the area.
At half time the score was 0-0.
The second half started badly for the visitors when on 49 minutes Bishops Cleeve were awarded a free kick on their left just outside of the Clevedon area, Alex Sykes floated the kick across the box and it was met with a perfect header from Matt Liddiard who nodded back across the goal in to the far corner.
Having established the lead, Bishops Cleeve seemed content to defend in numbers and for the remainder of the half had only two other chances, a snap shot from Jake Lee and, in the dying seconds, a near post effort from Joe Parker that rebounded from the foot of the post.
For Clevedon there were several chances, the best of these being a corner taken by Alex Russell that hit the outside of the post as he crossed in to the area and an effort from Russell Church that bounced on the top of the hosts' cross bar.
The attendance at this Evo-Stik League Division 1 south and west away game shrunk to 56.
