A MAN has been left fighting for his life after being stabbed five times in an attack in Portishead.

A 28-year-old man from Clevedon appeared before North Somerset magistrates on Monday charged with the offence.

Craig Roberts, of Churchill Avenue, was arrested in the early hours of Saturday after Matthew Evans was stabbed five times at a house in Glebe Avenue, Portishead.

Roberts appeared at North Somerset Magistrates' Court in St Georges charged with grievous bodily harm with intent. He spoke only to confirm his name and address.

The prosecution alleges that Roberts attended his ex-partner's flat and saw her returning home with her new boyfriend.

Roberts is alleged to have then attacked Matthew Evans.

Roberts has not yet entered a plea for the offence and was remanded in custody to appear at Bristol Crown Court later this month.

The stabbing in the quiet Portishead street has shocked the neighbours, who were awoken by an ambulance and scores of police at 1.30am.

A forensic team spent all of Saturday at the flat, while police officers searched the adjacent garden.

Other officers conducted door to door enquiries and a police officer remained outside the premises until 11am on Sunday.

Get well messages for the victim have poured in via Facebook.

It is understood Mr Evans is now in a stable condition at Frenchay Hospital, Bristol.

A nearby resident said: "This is not the kind of thing we are used to around here.

"It's very disturbing and quite shocking."
