The Mother City welcomes the rugby season with a clash between our local boys and the Wellington side
Super Rugby season is back (ladies, say goodbye to your boyfriends and husbands), and Cape Town gets its first taste of the action on Friday, 28 February 2014 when the DHL Stormers take on New Zealand's Hurricanes at Newlands Stadium.
The local boys seem ready to rumble following three promising pre-season games in which they beat the Bulls and the Eastern Province Kings and narrowly lost 24-29 against the Boland Cavaliers. Despite the defeat, coach Allister Coetzee was confident about the Stormers's performance, particularly that of young players EW Viljoen, Daniel du Plessis, Justin Phillips and Jarryd Sage, all of whom were still in school in 2013. The only drawback was the knee injury suffered by fullback Jaco Taute, who will be out of play when the Stormers face the Lions at Ellis Park for the season opener; it remains to be seen if the Springbok player will be ready for the Cape Town game.
Meanwhile, the Hurricanes also have their own injury drama and are calling on rookie reinforcements to round out the squad in the lead-up to the two matches in South Africa for the new season. The team will be playing without loose forwards Victor Vito and Brad Shields, prop Reggie Goodes, midfielder Tim Bateman and wing Matt Proctor.
Though things definitely look more positive for the Stormers, it could still be anyone's game as both teams fight for a strong start to the season.
