The floors and floors of furniture you find at Challicom & co aren''t generally to my taste and the displays feel cluttered and a bit staid. That said, the sale signs in the window drew me in for a browse in June - tempted by the Kath Kitson style quilts on the ground floor. The ladies who work there are friendly if a bit intimidating at times can be roused to help you if you''re looking for something but I felt I was interupting a comfortable chat they were engaged in and my interest wasn''t complete welcome. I wonder how much of their furniture they sell but hope they continue to make a profit as Challicom & Co are a bit of an institution in Clevedon. I would be interested to know if they are attracting new customers and younger ones too. However lots of the sale items were great and after a few weeks of indecision I returned to get some curtains and a quilt and have not regretted my choice. I hope they continue to do well because too many of these sorts of shops are finding the current economic climate very tough.

I have never found the staff in this shop very friendly.
What is sells is okay in fact it has quite a nice range.
Furniture, soft furnishings, rugs and bits and bobs for the house.
But when you walk in you feel like you forgot to knock.
I went in the other week to buy a table lamp.
There were three on a shelf but all too big for my purposes.
Do you have anymore? I asked.
No, said the shop assistant emphatically.
Then I spotted more behind him on a higher self.
I pointed to the others he agreed there might be more about.
I was left to walk around the store, all three storeys and hunt the required article.
This isnt an isolated incident.
I went in with my boss one day and two assistants were having a heated discussion across the shop floor.
We left.
This is an old-fashioned store but it doesnt seem to have old-fashioned manners.
I have bought cushions, telephone table, rug in fact all sorts of things here and probably would buy more if I was comfortable in the store.
Suppose I am more a John Lewis person.
I just dont feel comfortable shopping here yet I love Hill Road.
